6/10/2022 0 Comments WIP update - Short storyG’day everyone, Well I did it! I’ve completed a first draft on a new short story. My previous post I’d mentioned reading an article that releasing short stories was a great way to assist in increasing an authors reach so I thought I’d dive in and give it a go. A was lucky enough to have a week off work after the kids went back to school so I thought it was a great opportunity to dive in, with a view to put something together around 10,000 words which I could release as a short read. I had a very basic idea (about 10 bullet points really) of a story which I was nervous about seeings I always viewed myself as more a plotter then a pantser but I got stuck in anyway. To be 100% transparent…. I may be a pantser. It was such fun just to let my character take the lead and I found that I was really enjoying my writing. Over the 3 days I managed to hit 9,300 words as a first draft. Already looking over it, I can see that I’ll probably get to the 10,000 where I want to add some extra details in.
I used that tomato method for my writing (the 25 minutes writing and 5 minutes off) to good effect and I was averaging about 600-700 words per block of writing. I’ll use tomorrow to tweak and fix up some continuity errors I know are in there and then I’ll rest the story for a week or two before having another look at it. One thing I haven’t struggled with before was a title for any works that I’ve started so it’s a strange sensation that now I can’t think of one for this completed work. Weird! As a side note update, I’ll be back working on my novel over the weekend. I’ve applied to be part of the publishable course through Queensland Writers Centre and need to submit 3,000 words as part of the application by the 12th October. I’m excited to take part if I’m accepted, it’s about building the author brand and you get to sit one on one with someone from the centre along with a workshop. It’s back to work for me next week and I won’t have the opportunity to write during the day like I have this week (argh!). I need to find a way to incorporate daily writing into my normal routine which can be easier said then done at times. Anyway, just thought I’d throw a quick update out there. Mark
