25/1/2023 0 Comments January updateWell! A busy start to 2023 in my writing world. Had a couple weeks off from the job that pays my bills and I finally settled on an editor to have a look at my novella through Fivver. Seems like a nice guy with some experience and I should get my manuscript back on 31st January with a release date, hopefully not too long after that. My biggest issue at the moment is trying to decide on a title for the book. I really got stuck into some competition writing. First up, I just submitted my entry to the GenreCon 2023 short story competition. It's an event that is run by the Queensland Writers Centre and free to enter for members, so I thought I'd give it a crack. The theme was 'Forbidden Doors' and automatically my mind went all sci fi/fantasy, but I gave it a little more thought and came up with something else. I loved it! The wife and eldest.... not so much (as the message below shows). After some tidying and editing, she came around and was a fan of the story in the end. They announce the winner in the middle of February, so fingers crossed, but it's the year of putting my work out there, so whatever the rest I'll learn from. Second up, I also entered the NYC Midnight short story competition. It's been running for 17 years now and it's held over 4 rounds. I'm currently in the first round and they gave me the following to write a 2,500 short story with.
Theme: Horror Character: Lawyer Object: Telepathy It closes this Saturday so I have to get my butt into gear and finish it off. The first draft is complete at 2,100 words so I'm definitely in the ballpark where I want to be. One debate we were having at home was about traditional horror writing (which my story is that I'm going to submit) and if it was worth pushing it with a horror comedy piece. I love the concept of the one I'm not entering so maybe I'll keep it on the radar and do it for fun. Third up, one of the accounts I follow is doing a microfiction competition with the theme 'Love has teeth'. the only other parameter is that the word count HAS to be 666 words. So the Bazza novel has been put on the back burner for the time being but with all the writing I've been doing I'm really keen to set him off on his adventures ASAP. I've been trying to read a bit more consistently as well which has been good. Anyway, quick update done! Take care Mark P.S. Thought I'd finally post a proper profile pic to my social media, proper for me anyway.
